Another Christmas Commission

I think I can get away with posting this a day early as I'm pretty sure the recipient won't see it on here. My client says she loves it but thinks her friend looks very sad. I think she looks intense (and maybe a little bit sad!)

A friend's Gran in Casablanca!

A friend asked me if I could paint his Gran for a Christmas present and mentioned she really likes the film Casablanca so I suggested a scene where she fills the shoes of Ingrid Bergman toasting Humphrey Bogart whilst Sam serenades them both! (I did intend to include a background of the restaurant/bar in the film complete with waiters in fez and exotic plants but that ol' demon called Time got the better of me!)

New Year's Eve Illustration

I was honoured to be asked by the legend that is 'Stick It On' to provide the illustration for their New Year's Eve promotional material. They're doing a 'world record attempt' for the most dj's in one night where anyone can apply to dj. We went with idea of depicting Roy Castle and Norris McWhirter from British children's TV show Record Breakers with the organiser of the night and, centre stage, the generic star of the show - you?

Wedding Anniversary Commission

I had fun doing this one for a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary.

President Obama

A quick sketch I did a while ago but, seeing as he's here at the moment, I thought i'd post this.

Bob Dylan

Here's something I did for a Bob Dylan tribute band - 'My Back Pages'. I'd been thinking of doing something referencing the 'cue card' image from Subterranean Homesick Blues for a while and the band name seemed to fit well (even though its the title of a totally different Dylan track!)

Tim Burton - WIP

Here's a 'work - in - progress' of Tim Burton. This has been sitting on my desktop for a while so thought I'd post it to (hopefully) spur me on to finish it! I want to bulk him out a little bit to get more of a likeness and maybe shape the glasses  to get more of a comedy effect.

Blue Eyed Sun

Here's something I was commissioned to do by my boss for my work's Christmas present (and to celebrate the greeting card company's 10th birthday) - everyone got a framed copy.  Belated 'Happy New Year' to everyone!

Bill Murray as Jimmi Hendrix

Here's a recent Christmas commission. The recipient really likes both Jimmi and Bill so when his girlfriend discovered Bill had appeared on stage somewhere dressed as Jimmi the idea for this was formed. Someone told me this was all in reference to a recent film but I'm non-the-wiser so if if anyone knows anything about this I'm all ears!

The Who

Sorry for the huge gap between posts. I've been working on all sorts of things which I'll post over the Christmas break. Here's one of The Who in their early days to get the ball rolling.

Dolly the Dog

Here's a quick portrait of a friend's dog (a chiwawa/ jack russell cross - or a 'chirussell') I did as a birthday present.

Here's something I did for a friend of mine. Check out her facebook page using the above link. Fans of Gil Elvgren will recognise the pose. Let's call this a pastiche rather than a complete rip off!

Tara & Najee

Here's one I did for a wedding invitation. Tara's British and Najee's American, hence the conjoined flags in the background.

Another W.I.P - Sid James

Yet another 'work in progress' - this time 'Carry On...' stalwart Sid James.

Magazine Mock-Up

I' ve seen this idea done a few times - a mock magazine or newspaper cover which portrays the subject as being big enough a deal to be worthy of a cover. In this case the idea came about as my client thought my initial background looked a bit odd compositionally - a view I had to agree with. The text really helped to unify everything together. Oh, and yes, the motorbike and private jet are photos...

A recent Commission

Here's a gift caricature I completed recently - all done on my trusty 12" wacom cintiq. I'd love to upgrade to the 21" version as the only time I really got to see this full size (A3) was when I got it printed off! Oh well, one day when I'm rich and famous!...

Me!

I've got a few projects I'm supposed to be working on but, instead, have come up with a new self caricature. I'd like to experiment more with screen and overlay layers in photoshop to try and get better lighting effects but, as I said, I'm supposed to be doing something else so its finished for now! This image may well end up on some self promotional material...

Another Gift Caricature

This is a thank you present for a maid of honour and best man at a wedding. They've recently announced their engagement too so thought I'd make a bit of a feature of the ring.

60th Birthday Commission

Here's one I've just finished - a 60th birthday gift for a guy who's just become landlord of his local pub. Here's the reaction I got from my client when I emailed her a jpeg - "Wow - that is fantastic!! I am really really pleased! You've really got him down to a t. Thanks so much. I shall make sure everyone is aware of your talents as they really do make fantastic pressies!" Made my day that did! Just got to get it printed, framed and posted in time now!

Ron Howard

I'll always know this guy as Richie Cunningham from Happy Days but since his time acting alongside The Fonze he's been a prolific film director - a few of my favourites of his being Cocoon, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind and Frost/ Nixon. Anyone else like the idea of Happy Days The Movie?!

You've got red on you!

A nice gory one this! Now I look at it again I think it needs a bit of work but at least its approaching being a finished piece of work!

Work in Progress

I've been having trouble finishing things recently. Here are a few caricatures I've started but haven't taken any further. I often find it hard to get back into a piece after a break. Maybe I'm not in the same frame of mind, I see the face differently or I worry that I'm going to mess up a potentially good piece! Anyway, here's Gil Scott Heron, Leonardo Di Caprio and Phil Collins - a very random selection I know. Hopefully I'll be spurred on to finish these soon!

Daniel Craig

I did this using a tiny reference photo in a tv listings magazine - (you can't have Christmas without a Bond film on telly!) - my eyes ache from staring at it! Must remember to save my eyes (and hopefully improve the quality of my work) by using much bigger reference material in future!

A recent dog portrait! I know - the left eye is far too big!

Another one for the monthly caricature competition on Wittygraphy.

The Goons

Bit of a work-in-progress this one but thought I'd give it an airing before I go back in and tighten it all up. The Goons were Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Michael Bentine & Harry Seacombe (I think the fifth guy pictured here is the announcer Andrew Timothy). Between 1951 and 1960 they created a world of surreal lunacy which is one of funniest and influential radio shows ever made.
